What does wellness mean to you?

My guess is that most people would respond to this question with one of two answers – first, being healthy means I don’t have an illness; or second, being healthy means I regularly exercise and watch what I eat. I guess that’s what I used to think as well, but in a world that has become so fast and busy – juggling demanding jobs, technology, family life, relationships and the list goes on, finding time to for self-care and wellness can sometimes be tricky.

I find, as women, we have been programmed genetically and socially to be the caregivers, to put others first and to make sure everyone is happy before ourselves. I feel that we are now becoming more aware that we have to make time for self-care and I know personally if I am not disciplined with my self-care habits it can take its toll on me and I am unable to show up as the best version of myself to sprinkle my magic on the world. It’s so true the saying that “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. Today, on Global Wellness Day, let’s focus on filling our own cups first so we can abundantly pour into the people and projects that we truly love and care about…

Wellness to me is a conscious development of the whole self. A state of physical, emotional, spiritual, professional and social wellbeing. Wellness is so much more than being healthy and free of disease; it is the actions that on a daily basis nurture your mind, body and soul to create a fulfilling life. Wellness is being mindful of who we give our energy to, it’s what we listen to, what we watch and what we put into our bodies to fuel it… When we prioritise our wellbeing, our decision-making, creativity, productivity, and performance improves across the board.


Let me share with you some of the ways I incorporate wellness into my life:


Morning rituals


Meditation: My day starts at 5am. I have my ‘hour of power’ or ‘miracle morning’, as I call this practice. This is the time I have completely on my own before anyone else is awake. I breathe and meditate, visualising the day ahead and how energetically I will show up. This is where the majority of my creative ideas mostly come from. I also have a list of affirmations and I journal each morning. Meditation has changed my life; I really struggled with it at the start as my mind is very busy! I started out with just 10 minutes a day and have now increased it to around 30 minutes each morning. It’s also my go-to when I’m under pressure throughout the day, too. I just remove myself and take 15 minutes to meditate and it really helps me to recalibrate and calm down so I can stay focused and present.

Mindful breathing: As I mentioned earlier, mindful breathing is another aspect of how I start my day – big, full, deep, mindful breaths. I also stop and do this 2 to 3 times a day, especially when things are a little stressful, as it regulates me, calms me and I become completely present. I take a deep breath in, count to 6, hold for 6 counts and breathe out counting to 6. I repeat 6 times. Give it a try…

Exercise/move daily: This is individual with what is right for you and can be walking the dog or bike riding with the kids, yoga or like me a boot camp with amazing women! Physical exercise every day increases the happy hormones and increases energy. Just remember energy attracts energy… I choose to exercise in the morning because its the time I can always commit to without anything getting in the road… I love the way exercise makes me feels – it gives me more energy, improves my focus & concentration and always helps me sleep better at the end of the day.




Good quality sleep is so important yet so underestimated for our health and wellbeing. Making sure you get 7 to 8 every night is essential. Sleep gives our mind and body time to recalibrate. If you struggle with this, try:

  • Going to bed at the same time each night and rising at the same time each day
  • Avoiding technology in the bedroom
  • Having a hot cup of chamomile tea before bed to start the winding down process


Nightly gratitude


Always before I go to sleep, I practice daily gratitude. This is also a practice that has changed my life – being aware of all the amazing things in our lives and being truly thankful. Thinking of all that I have instead of what I don’t have has created a life of unexpected abundance and when I say abundance, I mean in my relationship and general life.
