Getting to know the owner of Verve Beauty Therapy, Pia.


1)      How long have you been in business and what drew you to the beauty industry in the first place?pia - verve

I was “raised” in the beauty industry by my amazing Mum, Cass.  She was a nurse/salon owner/beauty therapist/skin lecturer at Flagstaff. I’ve now been in the skin therapy business for 18 years, actively participating in the evolution of the industry – I love what I do!

2)      What do you value the most in your business?

I value integrity above all else. I expect it of myself, my team and in all my professional partnerships. Having integrity governs/flows through every aspect of what we do, from our hands-on skills, to building on our professional education utilising different learning pathways, through to sharing our knowledge with clients & the skin industry & wider communities. Without integrity, you don’t have much!

3)      How do you find the right balance between your personal and professional life?

Having an excellent team that can share your workload is an absolute necessity, or there is no balance! Delegation is a must. I like to work & play hard, so it’s always a juggle of balancing extremes for me – Iyengar yoga, NLP & AcuEnergetics have helped me enormously. I find a cheeky vodka (or three!) also works wonders.

4)      How has dermaviduals assisted your business?

I researched other brands for over a year before I settled on dermaviduals.  I now finally feel like I stock, and use a skincare range that makes perfect sense! Their scientific, individualised concept has helped us cement and grow client trust & satisfaction alongside our own professional satisfaction. Having the scope to professionally prescribe for each individual skin concern is amazing. It constantly challenges us to be the best kind of “thinking therapist”.  As a result of stocking dermaviduals, Verve has grown into the skin specialist clinic that I’ve always wanted it to be.

5)      What attracts you to Melbourne?

My beautiful clients – I seriously believe we have the nicest clients around!! Verve has been established for over 25 years in a leafy, friendly, community-orientated suburb of the Boroondara region. We share our neighbourhood with a diverse range of businesses, including a number of other beauty/skin treatment clinics. To compete effectively, we must stand out above the rest and also must be known for our commitment to exceptional products & expertise in service & education.

6)      What keeps you inspired professionally?

Inspiration comes from within, but also by who & what you surround yourself with.  I am inspired on a daily basis by those leaders in the industry who are passionate about sharing honest information – there are a number of women (& some men) in our industry who blow me away with their professional knowledge, business acumen & willingness to help/share with others. My professional inspiration also comes from VANITY! I want to look as good as I can for as long as I can, which is why I surround myself with such AMAZING products & equipment!!!!

7)      If you had one piece of advice for people considering a career in the beauty industry, what would it be?

My advice to a potential newcomer to our ever-evolving industry is to really consider WHAT type of therapist you want to be. I believe there are two different streams of clients (& therapists) – those that want & are very happy with general relaxation & face/body maintenance, and those that actively commit to changing & improving their skin by working with different modalities & ingredients.

Either way, never stop learning! Take the time to consider & absorb information relevant to our industry on a daily basis. It doesn’t always have to be specific to the skin industry either – our mind & body work as one! Daily investment in learning will grow your knowledge & passion exponentially.  In turn, being exceptional will become the norm.

8)      New products and equipment enter the beauty industry almost daily.  How do you keep up with this and how do you determine what is hype and what is genuine?

I research, I trial, I ask questions & I listen. You can quickly learn who are genuine contenders when what they are offering makes sense & creates sustained positive change on a cellular level – many products & equipment do not!
