Beyond the Barrier 2026: Reflections, Insights and Highlights from the Conference

by | 20 August 2026

On Monday 17 August, more than 160 skin professionals, clinic partners, industry leaders and members of the derma aesthetics community came together at W Sydney for Beyond the Barrier 2026.

Built around the idea of looking beyond what we know today, the conference brought together science, education, business, leadership and community to explore what is next for professional skin health.

Advancing the conversation around skin health

At the heart of the day was a shared commitment to understanding skin at a deeper level and translating that knowledge into meaningful outcomes in clinic.

Lisa Paone opened the educational program with Advanced Skin Barrier Function, exploring how complex skin science can be translated into practical strategies for everyday clinical practice.

That conversation continued throughout the day, with Kai Atkinson’s Innovations in Corneotherapy: How Research Drives Results becoming one of the standout moments of the conference.

Drawing on advances in corneobiology and emerging research, Kai explored how our understanding of barrier structure and function continues to evolve. The depth of the presentation and the passion behind the science resonated strongly with the room, culminating in a standing ovation.

It was a powerful reminder of the curiosity and commitment to education that exists within our professional community.

Learning from those leading the way

The dermaviduals Brand Ambassador Panel brought another perspective to the day, moving from science into the realities of building a successful and future-focused clinic.

With insights spanning consultation, conversion, reputation and client relationships, the panel offered practical advice grounded in real-world experience. It was an opportunity for attendees to hear directly from practitioners who are navigating the same challenges, opportunities and changing expectations within the industry.

The conversation highlighted that professional success is not simply about what happens in the treatment room. It is also about how we communicate, connect and continue to evolve as leaders.

Carlii Lyon built on this theme with Courage to Be Unforgettable, encouraging practitioners to step confidently into their expertise and consider what it means to stand out as an industry leader.

Looking to the Future of Skincare

One of the most significant moments of the day was welcoming Michael Bohn and Martina Grams from KOKO dermaviduals in Germany, who travelled across the globe to join us in Sydney.

Their presentation, The Future of Skincare, explored the growing role of corneotherapy in preventative and corrective skin health, including its application in pre- and post-procedure care and its contribution to long-term skin longevity.

Going beyond the treatment room, Michael and Martina also provided a rare behind-the-scenes look at KOKO dermaviduals manufacturing in Germany, highlighting the high-tech processes that enable the formulation integrity and stability of genuine corneotherapeutic products and consistent clinical outcomes.

Their presentation offered a valuable global perspective and reinforced the importance of the work being done by KOKO dermaviduals to uphold the founding principles of corneotherapy through ongoing research and innovation, reinforcing the pivotal message behind our recent campaigns: healthy skin starts with a healthy barrier.

Beyond the science

Beyond the technical education, the day explored the broader factors that influence the success of practitioners and clinics.

Daniel Davis shared a practical framework for clarifying business vision and simplifying priorities, while Rebecca Miller brought energy and perspective to the room with her session on mindset, encouraging attendees to consider how personal growth and intentionality can influence the next stage of their business and life.

The day also created space to look at skin health from a more holistic perspective. Sandra Trostel’s live demonstration was a moving moment, with the room falling quiet as attendees joined in, took a moment to slow down, participate and find their zen.

The closing panel, featuring Robyn McAlpine, Rebecca Miller and Tamara Reid, brought the conversation back to the future, exploring industry shifts and changing consumer behaviour and considering where professional skin therapy is heading next.

Bringing our community together

While education was at the centre of Beyond the Barrier, connection was equally important.

The day created opportunities for practitioners, clinic partners, speakers, ambassadors and the wider derma aesthetics team to share ideas, build relationships and celebrate the profession we are all part of.

We are incredibly grateful to our event sponsors, Sparrow Insurance and Consilo, whose support helped bring the day to life.

We also celebrated three lucky door prize winners throughout the day, adding a little extra excitement and giving us another opportunity to celebrate the community who joined us.

Beyond the Barrier. Beyond Lives.

Our commitment to creating positive change extends beyond skin health.

As part of Beyond the Barrier, we continued our partnership with Transforming Beauty, an organisation working through the beauty industry to support women and girls affected by domestic and family violence.

Through the partnership, purchases of dermaviduals EGCG Liposomes and SIMKA Day Cream SPF 15 help support Transforming Beauty. It was important to us that the conference reflected not only our commitment to advancing skin health, but also our belief in the ability of our industry to create meaningful change beyond the treatment room.

Looking beyond the day

Beyond the Barrier may have come to an end, but the conversations, ideas and insights shared throughout the day are only just beginning.

Whether it is a new approach in clinic, a fresh perspective on business, a deeper understanding of skin science, or simply a renewed commitment to learning, we hope the takeaways from the day continue to have an impact long after the final presentation.

Progress happens when we keep asking questions, sharing knowledge and challenging what is possible.
