We spoke to Niki and Jane, co-owners of Talking Beauty Skin & Body Therapy, to get to know more about our Clinic of the Month…

How long have you been in business and what drew you to the beauty industry in the first place?

Talking Beauty opened its doors a little over twenty-two years ago. With humble beginnings in a two room clinic above a hairdresser, it was our passion to make people feel the very best in their own skin that has seen us grow into the business we are today.

What do you value the most in your business? 

Our team. The honesty, integrity and commitment of our team is what makes Talking Beauty such a special place. This extends to our much loved clients, many of whom have been with us since the very beginning.

How do you find the right balance between your personal and professional life?

We encourage all of our clients to take a little ‘me’ time and as business owners, we like to set a good example and practice what we preach. We believe in taking some time out to enjoy the little things in life – which means different things to different people. It comes from sharing a common belief that beauty starts with feeling good on the inside.

How has dermaviduals assisted your business?

dermaviduals has given us the ability to treat each client individually. Problems like Rosacea and Hypersensetivity (which we see a lot) were concerns that would have been far more difficult to treat previously – the products available were a one sized fits all approach. Now, we can individually tailor the treatments and products to the unique concerns of our clients. The results have been outstanding!

What attracts you to the Hawthorn area?

We have been part of the Hawthorn community for over twenty  years and it is the beautiful, friendly people and the feeling of well-being you get as you stroll down a leafy, tree lined street in autumn that will hopefully see us here for another twenty.

What keeps you inspired professionally?  

It goes back to why we started this business all those years ago, making people feel good about themselves. In our small way, we feel like we are truly making a difference in their lives. This is probably why we have so many loyal clients – in the end we strive to perfect our profession for them.

If you had one piece of advice for people considering a career in the beauty industry, what would it be?

Have empathy. The industry deals with real concerns that can leave many clients feeling very emotional. We need to recognise that and deal with each individual with empathy and attempt to understand what they are feeling. Only then can you have an honest dialogue with your client. The end result is a strong, more satisfying relationship.

New products and equipment enter the beauty industry almost daily.  How do you keep up with this and how do you determine what is hype and what is genuine?

We like to think that we practice due diligence in our clinic. So with any new advancement in the industry we always start by looking at the science behind it. Once we are satisfied that it meets our stringent criteria we will then begin to trial the product. Having been in the industry for such a long time we are quite adept at picking out the imitators from the genuine players in the market.
